La Agencia de Cultura japonesa, una división del Ministerio de Educación, Cultura, Deportes, Ciencia, y Tecnología, ha realizado dos encuestas pidiendo a las personas participantes que eligieran sus 50 animes y mangas favoritos de todos los tiempos.
Para tal fín, los organizadores proporcionaron listas preseleccionadas de las series más populares, aunque se dejó la posibilidad de añadir un manga o serie que no hubiera sido incluido en la encuesta.
Según los resultados, el anime "Neon Genesis Evangelion" se coloca en el primer puesto, seguido de "Nausicaa", "Laputa: Castle in the Sky", "Mobile Suit Gundam" y "Lupin III: El Castillo de Cagliostro".
